⍉ Mercy's husband, Amos

(1) Amos Sweet Sr. of Rhode Island and
(2) Elizabeth Straight
Rhode ISland marriage 2-15:  Amos Sweet, or N. Kingstown, and Elizabeth Straight of E. Greenwich; m. by Thomas Shippee.  Justice, Apr. 8, 1759.

(3) Amos Sweet (Jr)  ((FAG #14227544:  dates ✔; Burial Chapel Corner's Cemetery, Dunham, Quebec, CA)
    b. 5 Mar1766 in Kingston, Rhode Island
    d. 10 May 1838 in Dunham, Missisquoi, Quebec, Canada buried in Chapel Corners, Dunham, Ca
son of (1) Amos Sweet and (2) Elizabeth Straight, formerly of Rhode Island.
Amos and Elizabeth Straight marriage record  Index

(4) Mercy Carpenter
    b. (headstone shows ca. 1768)
    d.  14 Nov 1828 buried in Chapel Corner, Dunham, Quebec, Ca

Amos was born in Rhode Island, but moved with his family to Albany County, New York in the area later known as Stephenstown, Rensselaer, New York.  He and many of his family moved up to Dunham, Quebec, Canada.  He is buried in the Chapel Corner's Cemetery there in Dunham.

It was believed that this was our Amos for some time.  However, this is not possible.  This man is most definately the son of Amos Sweet and Elizabeth Straight, with his birth recorded in Rhode Island and on his headstone.  He is having children with Mercy at the same time our Sarah Grace Sweet is born from Dorcas, thus leaving us to reason that there is another Amos who is Sarah Grace's father.

We have multiple men by the name of Amos Sweet, and we do not know when the erronious information began to creep in to our family story.  However, we can state with a very high probability that Mercy's husband is not our ancestor.

The family of Amos Sweet and Mercy Carpenter are as follows (from Aunt Betty)
(5) Benjamin Sweet: 1788 - 1863
(6) Stephen Van Rennselaer Sweet:   1792 - 1872
(8) Amos Sweet (III):  19 Aug 1797 - 1872
(9) Elizabeth Sweet:  1799 - 1848
(12) Joseph Carpenter Sweet 1805 - 1887
(14) Mercy Sweet:  1808

Sweet, Benjamin Jeffery.  Union officer.  1832-74, N.Y., Maj. 6th Wis. 16 July '61; Lt. Col. 17 Sep '61.  Col 21st Wis. 5 Sep '62; resigned 8 Sept. '63; Bvt. B.G. USV 20 Dec. '64.  The son of a poor and ill minister, he went to work in the cotton mills at 9.  He was able to attend college for a year, studied law at night, and was elected to the Wis. state senate at 27.  He was commissioned a Maj. at the war's beginning and riased several other Wis. regiments.  Confined to an ambulance with malaria at Perryville, he left and mounted his hourse to command his regiment.  Here he was wounded most seriously, and this permanently impared his heath.  Entering the Vet. Res. Corps, he took command of Camp Douglas (Ill) where 10,000 Confederate prisoners were held.  In June '64 he received word that an outbreak would occur 4 July to liberate the prisoners and arm them to sack and destroy Chicago.  By quickly strengthening his garrison, he discouraged this attempt.  However, the following Nov. he again received word that another attack was planned for election night, then only three days away.  Allegedly, there were 5,000 armed men and their leaders in Chicago and muskets for 9,000 prisoners.  Appleton's says, "Chicago was to be burned, and its flames were to be signal for a general uprising of 500,000 well-armed men throughout the western country."  Sweet had only 796 men in his Vet. Res. Corps garrison, most of whom were not fit for active duty.  Realizing that the only plan feasible was the arrest of the Chicago leaders, he called one of the prisoners, a Texas Ranger named John T. Shanks, to locate the rebel conspirators.  Sweet arrnged for Shank's escape from the came to allay the Confederates' suspicions and then had him trailed by detectives under orders to kill him at the first sign of treachery.  Shanks, however, served him well, and the leaders were under arrest within 36 hours.  The citizens of Chicago held a mass meeting to thank the man who saved their city.  He was breveted B.G. USV for this.  After the war he practiced law and held several offices in the federal pension and internal- revenue offices.
