Looking for our Amos Sweet - 2019

We have spent years looking for our Amos Sweet, husband to Dorcas (possibly Mary Dorcas with unknown last name).  They are the parents of Sarah Grace Sweet, who married Daniel Wood.  *See right hand notes for more known details.

Our Amos - husband of Mary Dorcas (possibly just Dorcas) unknown surname, unknown parentage
      Amos Sweet - b. (ca. 1768-1773)
      Dorcas or Mary Dorcas ____ - b. (ca. 1771-1775)
           Amos Sweet - b. about 1791
           Elias Sweet - b. 1784  d. 1832
           Sarah Grace Sweet - b. 1799  d. 1863
           Lydia Sweet - b. about 1802, d. 1885

⍉

Amos Sweet - husband of Mercy Carpenter and son of Amos Sweet and Elizabeth Straight
In the process, we have been able to discover this Amos is not our ancestor.  This couple is having children at the same time as our Amos and Dorcas, and this Amos becomes Amos from Canada.  The early research shows Canada Amos' dates on our ancestor.  We have been able to prove that those dates belong to Canada's Amos and not ours.
    Amos Sweet - b. 5 Mar 1766 Kingston, RI, d. 10 May 1838 Dunham, Quebec, Canada
    Mercy Carpenter - b. ca 1768 d. 14 Nov 1828, Dunham, Quebec, Canada
          Benjamin abt 1788 d. bef 1863
          StephenVanrensselaer - b. 1792
          Phoebe Sweet - b. abt 1793; d. 30 Jul 1858
          Amos Sweet - b. 19 Aug 1797; d. 29 Oct 1872
          Elizabeth (Betsy) b. 1799
          Temperance b. 1 Jan 1800 d. 8 Sep 1858
          Joseph Carpenter - b. Apr 1805; d. 29 Dec 1887
          Mercy Sweet - b. Oct 1808; d. 3 Sep 1890
          Hannah - b. 1810

Amos Sweet - son of David Sweet and Mercy Sweet of Beekman, Dutchess, NY
I believed for some time that this Amos was 'our Amos'.  However upon finding a school record listing his children, I no longer believe this man is ours.  Amos undoubtedly lived for a time in Rensselaer County, New York, and then moved, as did his father David to Beekman, Dutchess, New York.
Amos Sweet - b. 26 Dec 1755 East Greenwich, RI  d. of Beekman, Cayuga, New York
      married ?
children:  (from a school record Amos of Beekman Noxon's school Nov 1795-1796, gender and counts fitting well with 1790 census)
            Rufus
            Mary
            David
            Amos Jr.
            George

Amos Sweet - son of Amos Sweet and Hannah Richardson, husband of Sally Sweet
This Amos appears to have been born and died in Attleboro, Bristol,  MA.
      Amos Sweet - b. 30 Jun 1766 Attleboro, MA  d.
      Sally Sweet - b.       mar. - 16 Jun 1796
            Clarrissa - b. 3 Oct 1796
            Summer - b. 27 May 1800
            Margareet - b. 14 Feb 1802
            Amos - b. 3 Dec 1804
            Hannah - b. 19 Feb 1810
            Hannah - b.24 Aug 1810
            Joabert - b. 3 Jan 1812
            Joabert - b. 1 Oct 1818

By reason of well documented wife and children, born in Attleboro, MA, we can safely rule this man out as 'our Amos'.  Although I believed Amos and Hannah lived in Attleboro their entire lives a theory that he spent some time

Hints from Sarah Sweet Warren Wood

Parents lived in the Mohawk Valley:  (this includes Schenectady, Montgomery, Fulton, Herkimer, Oneida.)

However, when researching the Sweets, they did not live in the Mohawk Valley.  Not likely they lived there.
I believe they were in the Hudsen Valley, according to Sarah Graces birth from Family Group Records, and tick on the 1790 census

Cemetery notes and/or description:
The Luther Sweet family created this cemetery, it appears on the 1876 plat map of Rensselaer County across the road from the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The Luther Sweet cemetery was established in about 1847 as a small, private burial ground for the Luther Sweet (the older) family.

The cemetery plot is located on private property near the "Pointed Window" house on the NE side of NY Highway 2, about 0.6 miles west of NY Highway 22 near Petersburgh, Rensselaer county, New York.  Ask permission.

Hoosick

Sarah Grace Sweet's descendents say that she was born in Hoosick.

In 1779, Samuel Sweet is the only Sweet in the Hoosick Taxlists, Albany County.

Too many Amos'. Who's line is it anyway?

This is the old information that was submitted to the Church, but also to all descendents of Amos Jr. and Mary Dorcas.

The problem is that the information on Amos is incorrect.

There are multiple Amos' born in 1766.

Amos and Hannah Richardson Sweet
had Amos 30 Jun 1766 in Attleboro.  He is not our ancestor.

Our Amos did not marry two women:  1.  Mercy Carpenter and 2. Mary Dorcas.  They were having children at the same time, and Mercy's husband was in Canada.

Mercy's husband Amos was the son of Amos and Elizabeth Straight Sweet.  He was born 5 Mar 1766, and died 10 May 1838.  He is not our ancestor.

I have a birth date of 5 Feb 1766.  I cannot find proof to whom it belongs.
I have a death date of 1832.  I have not found whom that date belongs to either.
These may be the dates of our Amos.

David's Amos was born 26 Dec 1755.  I have not found his wifes name but Amos receives the land at his father's death.  Land records may include her name.

Beekman Amos is thought to have been born about 1754.  (This is David's Amos:  born 26 Dec 1755)

Amos of Milford was born 15 Mar 1784 and died 28 Jan 1823.  This makes him too young to be the parents of the children listed above.

Ulysses Amos is a bit hard to read in 1800.  He has too many children in the household but he is the correct age.  He deserves more research.

OLD IGI RECORDS SHOW:
Dorcas as the most common name of Amos' wife, mother of Sarah Grace.
Marriage 1783, by two seperate submissions.
Amos birth 1766 in Hoosick, Rensselaer, NY,  Death 1848.
Mercy's husbands birth and death - which are incorrect.

Amos Sweet 1766 - 1848 of Hoosick, New York
Mary Dorcas// 1768 -
  Married 1783
Children:  Amos 1791-  (Aunt Betty Wood had 1784)
                    Elias 1795 -   ( Aunt Betty Wood had 1791)
Sarah Grace - 1799  (This information is from her children) in Hoosick, Ren, NY
                    Lydia - 1802

Insight into the home of Sarah Grace Sweet's ancestors

"French and Indian" raid and burning of Hoosick in August 1754. North American forces fought with each other over the next two years although war was not declared until 1756. Although for the most part, fighting ended in North America following the fall of Quebec in 1759, this conflict was not concluded officially until the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763.
