Stephentown from History of Rensselaer County New York

Book: 

 Pg 451:  Stephentown was named for Stephen Van Rensselaer, formed from Rensselaerawyck on 29 Mar 1784.

The town was first settled about 1765, by pioneers from Connecticut, and Rhode Island who entered town at the southeast corner and located upon the rocky hills there.  Asa and William Douglas settled there in 1765-66, but others believe the first settlement was made by Elnathan Sweet, Nathaniel

P 454:  East of Kinderhook Creek, from north to south are the lots of many including C. Sweet.  

Pathmasters of the town in 1784 included Samuel Sweet.  

P 499:  Burying Places, the Old Baptist Cemetery on the hill back of Stephentown village is one of the oldest in the town, and contains the remains of many of the first settlers of the town.  It was probably laid out about the time of the formation of the church, or in 1795 or 1796.  Among the stones still standing in the yard are those of Rufus Sweet, died April 11, 1850, aged 84; ... Elnathan Sweet, died Sept 25, 1819, in his 73 year; ...   (Rufus is the son of Elnathan in this cemetery)

David Sweet and Mercy Spencer are the parents of Elnathan Sweet Sr. as well as the (green) Amos Sweet line, which does not turn out to be our line - having found the names of children in a school record.  Elnathan Sweet Sr and Mehitabel Rogers are the parents of Elnathan Sweet Jr, Rufus Sweet . 

Epidemic 1813

Page 510:  The year following, in 1813, an epidemic made its appearance in the valley of the Hoosick, and swept through the country like a tornado.  The inhabitants of the valley had, from the earliest settlement, been much favored in health.  Very few cases of those complaints that generally afflict people of new countries, such as ague, bilious complaints, etc.  But few deaths had occurred comparative to the humber of inhabitants; but when the epidemic made its appearance it was but the warning of the near approach of the angel of death.

  "There was little or no exception as to age; the young and athletic fell before the destroyer.  The grand lever of human greatness broke at the silent touch of this awful disease.  Mourning as in almost every house; but few families escaped.  Few cases were cured; the knowledge of the physicians was altogether too limited to stay the fever of this raging epidemic.  The habiliments of mourning were everywhere, and the wail of widows and orphans not infrequent.  It made its appearance near midwinter, and continued till warm weather."

Page 511:

The road from Stephentown to Petersburgh, passing north and south through the town (of Berlin) (NY Highway 22), is the oldest existing highway in the town.  It was first an Indian trail, then the settlers' pathway through the wilderness, and finally a public highway.  The Green Hollow Turnpike, running from Albany to Williamstown, east and west through the town, is probably nearly as ancient.  The Harlem Extension Railroad passes north and south through the town, having stations at North, Centre, and South Berlin.

At the close of the French-and-Indian war in 1760, the country extended from the Walloomsac, near the junction of the Little Hoosick with the Hoosick, was covered with a dense forest of oak and pine, broken in only two places by the axe of the settler.  Jan Outhout had some time before 1754 erected a dwelling just within the present boundaries of the village of Hoosick Falls, on land afterwards owned by Henry Barnhart.  Pitt II .. had made a clearing and built a house two miles farther south, on the farm now owned by Mr. Nicholas Brown.

  At and near the junction of the Little Hoosick with the Hoosick was the settlement known in colonial records as Hosack.  It occupied those fertile meadows lying between ...

The legal description of the town from the revised statutes of the State:  "The town of Hoosick shall contain all that part of said county bounded northerly and casterly by the bounds of the county, southerly by Petersburgh and Frafton, and westly by Pittstown."

  The title to the soil in this town is derived through three original petents, the Hoosick, the Walloomsac, and the Schneider.

  The Hoosick Patent.  This was granted June 3, 1688 by Thomas Dongan

  The Walloomsac Patent.  This tract, lying north of the Hoosick but extending farther east, was granted June 15, 1739, to Edward Collins, James ....This patent conveyed about 12,000 acres lying along the Walloomsac River, partly in what is now Washington County and parly in the county of Rensselaer.

  The Schneider Patent.  July 8, 1761, land "bounded northwardly by the patent of Wallumshack, southwardly by the patent of Rensselaerwyck, westwardly by the patent of Hoseck, and eastwardly by other vacant lands, containing about 10,000.  

Hoosick is divided into two nearly equal parts by the Hoosick River.  This is an old historis stream, whose valley was the war-path along which the French and Indians made their stealthy marches upon the villages of New England.  This river, having received the waters of the Little Hoosick just within the town of Petersburgh, enters this town a little east of the central point of the southern boundary, and flows slightly west of north until it reaches the line of White Creek..  

Taking a break

After looking at every record available to me at this time, I am going to take a much needed break from the Sweet family.   To summarize, there were multiple Amos Sweets from the area, all seem to have come from Massachusetts.  They are all related and moved to New York because of their relationships and land opportunities.

An Amos Sweet Sr. married Elizabeth Straight.  They had a son Amos Sweet, Jr. who married Mercy Carpenter and they had a large family together.  Amos and Mercy took most of their family and moved to Canada where the lived the remainder of their lives.  This Amos Sweet Sr is of the age he could be our grandfather, but because the children of Amos Jr. and Mercy are being born at the same time as our Amos and Dorcas were having children, and in different countries, we are able to rule out these two as our ancestors.

Amos Sweet Sr. born about 1730 in North Kingstown, Washington, Rhode Island, son of John Sweet 1682 and Lydia Whaley 1684.  He married Elizabeth Straight 8 April 1759.  Elizabeth was born 9 March 1734 in East Greenwich, Kent, Rhode Island, to Henry Straight 1709, and Sarah Sunderland 1705.

Children incluede:  Henry, Sarah Grace 1760, Lydia, Amos Sweet, Jr. (Mar 1766), Isaiah and Elizabeth

Sarah Grace Sweet 1760, married Auigustus Jerome about 1780 and had issue.

Lydia Sweet 1764, married Abel Tanner about 1782 in Washington, Rhode Island and had issue.

Amos Sweet, Jr.  born 5 March 1766 in East Greenwich, Kent, Rhode Island of Amos Sr and Elizabeth Straight.  Married Mercy Carpenter in 1784 in Stephentown, Rensselaer (guess).  Mercy is the daughter of AJoseph Carpenter 1736 and Phebe Ladd 1733.

Their children include:  Benjamin 1788, Stephgen Van Renselleur 1792, Phoebe 1793, Amos III 1797, Elizabeth 1799, Temperance 1800, Noah 1802, Joseph Carpenter 1805, Anna 1806,  Mercy 1808, Hannah 1810, Kylar 1820 (big jump in years.  is this right?) and ?Elizabeth "Betsy" Sweet. 

This family can be found in the Canada records, as they moved there about the turn of the century.  However, Amos Sr. died in 1793 and was buried in New York.  Mercy went with the family that moved to Canada

 Amos Sweet III, born 19 August 1797, very near the age of Sarah Grace, married Elizabeth Fitchett and have issue.  Records are clear that this family was in Dunham, Missisquoi, Quebec, Canada.

Amos Sr. b. 1755 , son of David Sweet, b. 1716  and they move around together.  I hoped and thought this was our line for a few years, but upon finding the school record of Amos' 1755  children (wife unknown to me, children:  Rufus, Mary, David, Amos Jr., George), we are also able to rule out David's son Amos as our father of Sarah Grace.  They settled in Beekman, Dutchess, NY.  

        David, (b. 23 July 1716), son of  John Sweet 1684, and Catherine Whitford about 1684.  Married  Mercy Sweet  (Hoosick Historical Society shows Mercy Spencer) (b. aboujt 1719) on June 1737 in North Kingstown,  RI.  Children include: Catherine 1743, Eunice 1744, Elnathan 1746, Jonathan 1748, David 1750, Mary Mercy 1751,   John 1753, this Amos Sr. 1755, and Mercy 1760.

     Amos Sr.'s children:   Rufus, Mary, David,  Amos Jr., and George, of Beekman, Dutchess, New York.

Amos Jr. - there is a very slight change that he is our ancestor, but being in school just a few short years before Sarah Grace was born is highly unlikely in my opinion.  The birth dates of all Amos Jr.'s siblings and he are only a guess.

Amos Elias Sweet II of Attleboro is easy to rule out as he stayed put (possibly with a short stay in New York, and then moved back to Attleboro.  The records are plentiful on his family, thus we are able to rule him out as our ancestor.  Amos is the son of Amos Sweet Sr. and Hannah Richardson.

        Amos  Elias Sweet Sr,  born 9 Mar 1735, of  John Sweet 1695, and Sarah Claflin 1706.  Married  Hannah Richardson,  born 17 October 1744 in Attleboro, MA.  Married: 9 Oct 1762 in Attleborough.  Children:   Nancy 1764, Hannah 1764, Amos Elias Sweet II 1766, Elias 1768, Elizabeth 1771, Asahel 1776, John Coy 1778, Stephen 1781, Olney 1783, Nancy 1785 and Polly 1788.

Amos Elias Sweet II, born 30 January 1766 in Attleborough, Bristol, MA of Amos Elias Sweet Sr. and Hannah Richardson.  He married Sally Sweet b. 19 August 1777 in Attleboro, Bristol, MA.  Sally is the daughter of  Thomas Sweet 1741 and Margaret Foster 1742 of Attleboro.  Children include:  Sally, Clarisa, Sumner, Margaret A, Amos III, Hannah 1810-1814,  Joabert 1812-1814, Hannah 1814-1892, Joabert 1818-1898, Charles Allenm and Mina.

Amos III, married 7 Mar 1833 Mary Thrasher 1815-1837 and in 1838 married Sarah Thrasher 1809-1898.

Amos of Milford, Otsego NY is a contemporary of our Amos.  He married Patience Eldred and raised a family with her.  This Amos is the son of Jonathan Sweet and MaryAnn Brimmer.  Another option is  that he is the son of Jonathan Sweet 1755 and Margaret Elizabeth Jones.  This line looks more full, but I have not researched either of them.  Their children are listed, starting in 1809, which is after Sarah Grace was born, so I have not researched further.

In 1800 Census we have an Amos from Cayuga, Ulysses, NY  4.2.0.0.1   1.1.0.1.  0.0

There is an Amos of Rutland, Pittsford VA which I have not researched yet.  1.1.2   He is also in the 1800 census, in Rutland, Pittsford, VA.

Research on Sarah Grace's family is also hard to find primary sources.  Information in her history shows that her father Amos is the son of Amos Sweet and Elizabeth Straight.  This has been proven highly unlikely as stated above, he having married Mercy Carpenter.

Nora Carter, granddaughter of Sarah Grace states that Grace's parents lived in the Mohawk Valley.  Hoosick is not in the Mohawk Valley.

I still have not found the Farm maps, three of them, which were listed in the New York Land Records, 1630-1975, Albany County, Category:  Land Records, and then as "Farm map index no date A-Z.

There is a Dorcas Joanna Casey, born 16 Jun 1749 in Exeter, Washington, RI, daughter of Thomas Casey and Alice Tripp.  She married Stephen Sweet 1745-1794 of North Kingston on 1773.  

Looking for our Amos Sweet - 2019

We have spent years looking for our Amos Sweet, husband to Dorcas (possibly Mary Dorcas with unknown last name).  They are the parents of Sarah Grace Sweet, who married Daniel Wood.  *See right hand notes for more known details.

In the process, we have been able to discover this Amos is not our ancestor.  This couple is having children at the same time as our Amos and Dorcas, and this Amos becomes Amos from Canada.  The early research shows Canada Amos' dates on our ancestor.  We have been able to prove that those dates belong to Canada's Amos and not ours.

I believed for some time that this Amos was 'our Amos'.  However upon finding a school record listing his children, I no longer believe this man is ours.  Amos undoubtedly lived for a time in Rensselaer County, New York, and then moved, as did his father David to Beekman, Dutchess, New York.

Too many Amos'. Who's line is it anyway?

This is the old information that was submitted to the Church, but also to all descendents of Amos Jr. and Mary Dorcas.

The problem is that the information on Amos is incorrect.

There are multiple Amos' born in 1766.

Amos and Hannah Richardson Sweet
had Amos 30 Jun 1766 in Attleboro.  He is not our ancestor.

Our Amos did not marry two women:  1.  Mercy Carpenter and 2. Mary Dorcas.  They were having children at the same time, and Mercy's husband was in Canada.

Mercy's husband Amos was the son of Amos and Elizabeth Straight Sweet.  He was born 5 Mar 1766, and died 10 May 1838.  He is not our ancestor.

I have a birth date of 5 Feb 1766.  I cannot find proof to whom it belongs.
I have a death date of 1832.  I have not found whom that date belongs to either.
     These may be the dates of our Amos.

David's Amos was born 26 Dec 1755.  I have not found his wifes name but Amos receives the land at his father's death.  Land records may include her name.

Beekman Amos is thought to have been born about 1754.  (This is David's Amos:  born 26 Dec 1755)

Amos of Milford was born 15 Mar 1784 and died 28 Jan 1823.  This makes him too young to be the parents of the children listed above.

Ulysses Amos is a bit hard to read in 1800.  He has too many children in the household but he is the correct age.  He deserves more research.

Insight into the home of Sarah Grace Sweet's ancestors

 "French and Indian" raid and burning of Hoosick in August 1754. North American forces fought with each other over the next two years although war was not declared until 1756. Although for the most part, fighting ended in North America following the fall of Quebec in 1759, this conflict was not concluded officially until the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763.

Ancestry of Sarah Grace Sweet - Take 2

Sarah Grace Sweet was born 13 Jan 1799 in Hoosick, Rensselaer, New York to Amos and Dorcas Sweet. She grew to womanhood in New York State.  Her parents lived in the Mohawk Valley.  Sarah married, first, Zenos C. Warren and then Daniel Wood.(1)

In 1800, there are three Amos Sweet's that are the head of households.  Other members of the family are not listed in this census, but are a tally mark in the correct age group.  The three Amos' are:

To make sure that I didn't miss another Amos that may have been indexed under another name, I did a line by line search for Amos in  Stephentown and Hoosick, both of Rensselaer, New York. There were no Amos' living there that were enumerated in 1800.  (6)

A search for "Amos" and another for "Sweet" in Kent, Rhode Island and  did not prove to be fruitful.  No possible Amos' were living in Rensselaer either, when doing a search by given name hoping to find our Amos indexed incorrectly.  It appears that these three are the only head of household by the name of Amos.  I double checked on familysearch.org 1800 Census. (7)

There remains the possibility that Amos and his wife Dorcas were living with one of their family members and was only enumerated as a tally mark with their daughter Sarah Grace.

1810 CENSUS SEARCH:  (Sarah Grace would have been 10-11)

In the year 1810, there are only two Amos Sweet's that show up on a name search in Heritage Quest. Another  is included in FamilySearch's results.  They include:

Massachusetts have superior records and a birth record for this Amos is easily found.

4.  Amos Sweet, was born 30 Jan 1766 to Amos Sweet and Sally Sweet in Attleboro, Bristol, Massachusetts. (10)  This would make him about 44 years old in this census.  Amos married Sally Sweet on 16 Jun 1796, also in Attleboro.  She was born 19 Aug 1777. (11, 12)  Sally would have been 33 at the time of this census.

Amos and Sally Sweet had the follow children in 1810, all born in Attleboro, Bristol, Massachusetts.

Although Sarah Grace has never been attached to Attleboro, that I know of, the birth date of Amos has been used at times.  The Amos Sweet from Attleboro, born 30 Jan 1766, is a distant relative to Sarah Grace, but is most definitely proven to not be her father. 

In 1800 the "Sweat" family is starting to move into New York.  in the 1800 Census there are five Sweat's including:  Eleazer, Elijah, Elijah Jr., and Stephen in Chenango County, and Rincon  Sweat in Queens.  (19) 

By 1810, the "Sweat's" have begun moving into the Rennslaer area, with 20 households living in that county.  In Grafton we find an Amos as well as two other households.

               Luther.  FindaGrave #84977361 shows Luther was born Apr. 3, 1783 in North Kingstown, Washington, Rhode Island.  He died 3 Nov, 1861 and is buried in the Sweet Family Cemetery.  Luther married Sarah Sweet (1783-1850).  Children attached to him there that would have been with him in the 1810 census show Lutch Jr, (1805-1853); Sarah Sweet (1807-1850) and possibly Hannah Ann (1810-1821). (22)  (27 in 1810.)  

               Saml T.  A possible match for this Samuel can be found on Findagrave, marker #22301788.  Samuel Jr. was born 20 July 1756 in East Greenwich, Kent, Rhode Island to Samuel Sweet and Lydia Ellis.  He died 18 Jun 1819 in Berlin, Rensselaer, New York.  He married Elizabeth Griggs on 10 January 1789.  They were the parents of Holden Sweet, born May 1792 and died 5 September, 1866.  Holden married Polly Denison.  He is buried in the Center Berlin Baptist Cemetery in Berlin Rensselaer, New York.

Most of the names of Sweat were compared against Alford Sweet's Descendants of John Sweet, to no avail.  These names are not typical Sweet names that have previously been compiled.  (21)

A list of Interments in Rensselaer County on the USGenWeb, shows many Sweets having lived in the area. The name returns to "Sweet" as there are no "Sweat"s listed as there was in the 1810 census.

Findagrave shows Amos B. Sweet born  1 September 1790, died 5 January 1847 at 56y 4m 4d.  He married Lucy Sweet born 24 January 1791, died 21 June 1872 aged 81y 4m 28d.

York being weak in body but of sound mind and memory
